Simple, Fast and Effective? Choosing a Cleaner That Does Not Eat Your Floor

Most floor cleaners are acidic. Concrete is alkaline. Here is what that does over time - and the pH-neutral alternative.

Imagine a concrete or microcement floor at home or in the office. Now imagine you have stained it and need to clean it without a trace. Finally, imagine choosing the cleaner. That is where the dilemma begins.

The market is full of cleaners promising miracles against stains - and cleaning concrete with the wrong one will, over time, degrade the surface. The reason is simple: most detergents contain acids or their derivatives. Concrete is alkaline. On the pH scale from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (alkaline), healthy concrete sits at 10-12; lowering that accelerates deterioration.

The most readily available cleaners - especially those based on hydrochloric (muriatic) acid - are very effective on cement and concrete, and should nonetheless be avoided: the acid can remain in the floor and continue its corrosive work. Prefer neutral or alkaline products.

Daily cleaning: Steinfix 60

What you need is a pH-neutral cleaner that does not harm the surface and, while cleaning, adds protection. Ecobeton offers Steinfix 60, an innovative natural soap at pH 8.0 that cleans and protects: it saturates the pores of the substrate, leaving a protective layer that keeps the floor easy to clean. It contains nothing hazardous to people or the environment and is Nordic Ecolabel certified. Use it on natural stone, concrete and Ecobeton microcements such as Ercole and Microbond.

With every wash Steinfix 60 leaves an invisible impregnating layer in the pores that resists dirt and pollutants - so the treatment grows more effective with time and frequency. Use it like any floor cleaner, diluted in water, by hand or machine. First clean of a new floor: higher concentration; daily cleaning: lower. For heavily soiled floors, use a mildly abrasive pad on a rotary machine, leave to act for a few minutes, rinse.

Available in the UK as Steinfix.
