Repairing Concrete: Speed Is Not Everything

Fast-setting mortars all have limits - thickness, workability, weather, bond. Here is why we designed Crono the way we did.

When repairing concrete floors, speed matters - but so do reliability, ease of execution and how long the repair lasts. Plenty of rapid-setting products exist, and each has limitations. That is why we developed Crono, a high-performance mortar that lets you reopen to traffic within hours.

The thickness problem

Airport runway, factory loading ramp or your own driveway: you always run into the maximum - and minimum - thickness the product allows, and end up applying multiple layers, losing the advantage of speed. The minimum thickness is critical for ramps, transitions and slopes that must feather to zero. Crono applies from 0 to 10 cm.

When patching a pothole, good practice is to cut a "key" - a step of 1-2 cm at the edge - so the mortar never falls below its recommended thickness at a feathered edge. In a real hurry, this step is often skipped, and the repair fails from the edges inward. A mortar that goes from 0 to 10 cm in a single pass is far safer.

Thixotropic or self-levelling? Summer or winter?

Do you want to shape ramps and work on a slope, or pour and fill? And how does the material behave in winter cold or summer sun? Normally you need different products - a complication on site. Crono can be either thixotropic or self-levelling, with extended working time in summer or accelerated set in winter, using three sachet additives: Livella, Lento and Rapido.

Will it stay bonded?

Cement shrinks, and thermal cycling works the interface between old concrete and repair. Durability is the biggest question of all. Crono answers it three ways: low-shrinkage cements, polymers that raise adhesion and impermeability, and innovative ferro-chrome fibres for stability and flexural strength.

Green by design

All those additives might make Crono sound very "chemical". The opposite is true: sustainability guided its development. Its cements are fired at much lower temperatures than Portland, cutting fossil fuel and CO2; the polymers are latest-generation and non-fossil-derived; it contains recycled micronised glass; and it ships in recycled, recyclable buckets.

The numbers

  • Bond strength: over 2 MPa
  • Compressive strength: over 20 MPa at 3 hours; over 50 MPa at 28 days
  • Flexural strength: over 3.5 MPa at 3 hours; over 10 MPa at 28 days

Strong enough for a runway, a toll booth or a loading ramp under lorries - and available from our UK concrete repair range.
